Treasure items have no use except selling, and coins cannot be farmed, so always collect them. Each defeat is a story trophy; see the trophy guide.

Preparation that works for every fight

  • Dragon Breath Rounds (shotgun, 360 coins at the second shop after you get the Statue’s Head): sets bosses on fire with every shot.
  • Revolver (300 coins, same shop): high single-target damage, which TheGamer recommends for bosses.
  • Shotgun ammo does the most damage to bosses, according to PowerPyx.
  • Break every crate in an arena before you trigger the fight, and set traps in advance if you use them.
  • Turn on the boss health bar in the interface settings if you want to see progress; see difficulty and assists.

Full prices are on the weapons and shop page.

Bruno, first fight

Bruno’s first appearance, in the opening, is a stealth section: sneak past him, do not fight. The real fight comes later, in a small basement room.

  1. He moves fast and grabs. If he catches you, mash the attack trigger to break free, then dodge away.
  2. Use the room’s throwable objects first, then the shotgun; he has a large health bar even on lower difficulties.
  3. Partway through, he melts into a puddle of blood and follows you from below. Keep dodging until he reforms.
  4. When prompted, banish him. Pick up Bruno’s Scalpel from the floor.

Charlotte

Charlotte chases you through the early game, and shooting the lantern in the church during one escape unlocks a trophy. The fight itself:

  1. Search the arena for ammo and save the explosive barrels, gas cans and torches for her.
  2. Inspecting the altar starts waves of Unworthy. Use thrown objects to save ammo. When the police cars arrive, let the officers shoot the second wave.
  3. Charlotte then appears. Keep your distance, circle the two police cars, and keep her burning: her close slashes hit hard and can pin you.
  4. At about half health she climbs a cliff and throws exploding Unworthy at you. Shoot the one she is holding, in the stomach, and she falls back into the arena.
  5. When she flashes blue, execute her. Take Charlotte’s Crown from her body.

The Sister of Mercy

First, a stealth section. When she takes the box, you must cross her hall and climb to a hole at the top without being caught; being caught is an instant game over. Hide behind pillars and throw bottles to distract her. A detour left along the lower floor leads to an inventory upgrade.

The fight. She stays in the air, so melee alone will not work.

  1. Go up to the walkways: the dance floor floods with blood, although its crates hold ammo.
  2. Set her on fire with the shotgun, then switch to the Revolver for headshots. Thrown saws and spikes also work.
  3. When she throws knives, stop and dodge. You can grab knives out of the air with the box and throw them back, and doing so also breaks her blade shield.
  4. At about two-thirds and one-third health the room turns red. Back into a corner and shoot her as she comes at you.
  5. When she drops, use Hellchains as prompted. Finish her and take the Sister of Mercy’s Whip.

One fan wiki recommends blunt melee weapons here; PowerPyx, TheGamer and Thumb Wars all point to ranged weapons, because she rarely comes within reach.

Bruno, second fight

  1. The fight starts after you recover the Spirit Warding Bell. Set him on fire and use the shotgun at close range; Hellchains holds him in place.
  2. At half health he escapes through a hole in the wall. Heal, reload, and follow him to the second, larger area.
  3. He is faster now and grabs you from his blood puddle; mash to escape and keep the damage up.
  4. When he flashes blue, banish him. He takes the Genesis Configuration with him; collect Bruno’s Mask once you get the box back.

Marlowe, the final boss

The last shop comes just before this fight, and it is your final chance to craft and buy. You will not need melee weapons, so sell them.

  1. Shoot the three bodies on Marlowe’s back with the Revolver, SMG or Assault Rifle. Do not waste ammo on his main body yet.
  2. When all three are gone he is stunned. Use Hellchains to open him up and expose his real body, then hit it with the shotgun.
  3. At half health the fight moves to another part of the arena. Repeat the same pattern.
  4. Finish him with the box when prompted.

PowerPyx rates this fight as easier than the earlier bosses.

Mini-bosses

  • The many-armed creature before the Peephole Inset: shoot off its limbs, then banish it.
  • A large creature appears when you take the Gagged Skull: the same approach, limbs first.
  • The blob in the sewer blocks the way forward. The moving blocks with spinning blades underneath also cut through the zombies around it.

Do bosses get harder on higher difficulties?

Yes. Hard and Hellraiser bring tougher combat, fewer resources and, crucially, no autosave before a fight. Make a manual save before every boss on those modes; see difficulty settings.
